Rachel

Rachel

A United Way 211 Specialist received an early morning call from Rachel, a young woman who was crying and needed someone to talk to. After doing a lethality assessment to ensure Rachel was not suicidal, the specialist began to talk her through the situation. Rachel said she is a single mother of two children, and though she was proud to be a mother and only wanted what was best for them, they had become unruly. She felt like other adults were questioning her ability to parent, and Rachel wondered if they might be right.

While the specialist wanted to connect Rachel with counseling and family support resources, she knew that most of the organizations didn’t open until later in the day and recognized that Rachel needed to be heard in real-time. The two of them continued to talk about services available to parents. Together, they developed a plan for Rachel to engage her mom and siblings to help with her children and seek general counseling and family support.
